The .CLUB team was in full force at the 2nd Annual NamesCon conference at the Tropicana hotel earlier this month in Las Vegas. The second edition of this well run event was even more popular than last year’s great inaugural showing. There were more exhibitors, more attendees, more speakers, more sessions, more fun, and more business conducted during a very, very busy few days in the desert. Kudos to the NamesCon “A Team” of Richard Lau, Jothan Frakes, Jodi Chamberlain and James Morfopoulos for raising the bar for all domain industry events and creating a great environment for learning, networking and business.
SPIN TO WIN
The .CLUB booth was busy with free Coffee.club samples and other “swag” and a number of industry luminaries also won great prizes (from shirts, to Coffee.club subscriptions, to $1,000 premium name rebates) by spinning our own Wheel of “Good” Fortune. It was great to see so many of our partners, peers and friends, and to meet new domain investors and others. Colin and I both had the opportunity to speak on panels about new domain extensions, and the general air about the conference was one of positive energy, which is good news for all. While everyone would agree that we’re in the very early stages for the new top level domain names and overall consumer and business awareness remains very low, there was a strong showing by registries including Donuts, Uniregistry, Top Level Design, Minds and Machines and others and everyone seemed very optimistic about the future of domain names in an expanding marketplace.
SOLD!
One of the highlights of the event was the live domain name auction run by RightOfTheDot and powered by SnapNames. There were a large number of domain names sold during the lively auction across a wide swath of legacy and new domain extensions. Not surprisingly the biggest sale was that of a legacy .com name – Homecare.com for a whopping $350,000. However, the second largest sale of the night was for a vintage name of our own, Wine.club, which sold for a new gTLD record of $140,000. In all six of the ten names we offered were successfully sold at the auction: Wine.club, Fight.club, Weed.club, Tequila.club, Birthday.club and Fans.club. Congrats to all the winning bidders!
VEGAS.CLUB, BABY!
In a surprise announcement during the great keynote presentation by One Degree World CEO Howard Lefkowitz, we unveiled the sale of Vegas.club for $100,000, another great business incubated under our Startup.club program. Lefkowitz and his Vegas based team will be launching Vegas.club later this year as an exclusive membership club for a wide range of VIP services and experiences for travelers to Las Vegas. DomainNameWire editor Andrew Alleman captured the announcement, with all it’s Vegas style flair, in the video below. Thanks Andrew!
All in all, NamesCon was a great show for everyone, and especially the .CLUB team. We look forward to the event next year.
